The Salvation Army of Dane County Celebrates National Donut Day
An homage to the “Donut Lassies” of WWI, donuts will be brought to Madison service men, women, and first responders
Madison, WI (May 31, 2018) – On National Donut Day, occurring this year on Friday, June 1, donuts and doing good will make the perfect pair. First established in 1938 by The Salvation Army of Chicago, Dane County will celebrate the sweet day by delivering Dunkin Donuts donated goodies to service men and women in Madison.
Among the visited will be a branch of the Madison Police Department East District, Madison Fire Department Station 8, and the US Marine Corps Reserve Center. The remaining donated goodies will be brought to The Salvation Army’s shelter location on East Washington Avenue as a sweet treat for clients and guests.
Held annually on the first Friday of June, this year’s National Donut Day marks 101 years since The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” served the delicious treats to American soldiers on the front lines during World War I. The Salvation Army Donut Lassies are often credited with popularizing the sweet treat in the United States when the troops returned home from war. The donut now serves as a symbol of the services and comfort The Salvation Army provides to more than 25 million people each year.
In support of the work The Salvation Army is doing, red kettle DipJars will be available the week leading up to Donut Day at a number of locations across Madison, including: Dunkin Donuts on Emil Street, Dunkin Donuts on Park Street, Hy-Vee East, and MOKA coffee shop on East Washington Avenue. The DipJars are a quick and easy method of “dipping” credit or debit cards to make a pre-set donation. Donations can always be made via check or online.
Generously, Dunkin Donuts on Park Street has agreed to donate the donuts that will be delivered to the service men, women, and first responders around Madison. Together, we know that giving is sweet and that every little act of kindness makes a difference.
