The Salvation Army Summer Day Camp Program Goes Virtual
At-home Day Camp will be coordinated through weekly box deliveries and Zoom calls
DANE COUNTY – Things will look a little different this year for The Salvation Army’s Summer Day Camp program. Due to COVID-19, kids and staff will not be able to meet in-person, but “Day Camp in a Box” packages will be distributed to participants weekly, from June 22 to August 14.
Approximately 130 kids will receive weekly boxes of fun: Community Center participants will receive “Day Camp in a Box,” and families in emergency shelter will receive “Boredom Buster” boxes. Each box is themed, ranging from Animals to Superheroes, and contains snacks, crafts, devotionals, coloring sheets, activity pages, scavenger hunts, and more. Programming via Zoom provides the opportunity for children to see their peers and interact with staff.
“Children’s engagement over the summer is critical to their success in the fall and to their health and happiness while staying safe at home,” said Chris Casey, Community Center Director. “We serve thirty-two children during Summer Day Camp and we can’t miss this chance to virtually meet with them and to let them know we care.”
The Summer Day Camp program will end with a customary Talent Show, though this year’s will be virtual. Funding for the boxes was graciously provided by anonymous donors committed to shining a little light in Dane County.
