The Salvation Army Dane County Delivers Goodness on National Donut Day
Handing Out Smiles and Sweets by the Dozen on National Donut Day
MADISON, WI – Held annually on the first Friday in June, National Donut Day is a sweet time to celebrate America’s heroes. On June 5, The Salvation Army will thank the men and women on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic as well as to those in the Single Women's Shelter and Emergency Shelter by delivering delicious Greenbush Bakery donuts and hope.
This tradition dates back to World War I, when nearly 250 Salvation Army volunteers traveled overseas to provide emotional and spiritual support, fried confectionary, clothes and supplies to troops. For more than a century, the organization has continued to provide snacks, hydration, and comfort to the first responders and front-line workers.
“The Salvation Army has always been a beacon of hope and healing for those fighting for good,” said Major Melissa Shiels, Capital Area Program Director. “Today, we thank those who have kept our communities healthy and safe during the coronavirus pandemic and we bring some hope to families and individuals experiencing homelessness.”
This year, The Salvation Army will celebrate a moment of goodness by delivering donuts to:
- 60+ National Guardsmen serving at The Alliant Energy Center COVID-19 testing site
- 45 individuals in the Single Women's Shelter
- 50+ families in Emergency Shelter
Greenbush Bakery, a Madison favorite, has generously discounted donuts by the dozen to help make this holiday special for both first responders and those experiencing homelessness.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, The Salvation Army has adapted its services to meet the growing needs of America’s most vulnerable with drop-off family food boxes, increased capacity at emergency shelters, remote emotional and spiritual care through livestream services, care hotlines, and more.
