The Salvation Army Kettles Fell $55k Short of Christmas Goal
Late donations may still help reach the Red Kettle goal.

DANE COUNTY – The bells have stopped ringing, but the kettles have fallen $55,000 short of the $600,000 2019 Red Kettle Goal. In recent years, Red Kettle donations have made up to 30% of the organization’s annual funding. With cold weather nights and the number of clients seeking services on the rise, The Salvation Army hopes to alleviate the budget strain by continuing the donation period through the end of January.

Red Kettle donations directly support individualized and intensive case management, the only Single Women’s and Emergency Family Shelters in Dane County, seven housing programs including DAWNS, children’s programming at the Community Center, meals for the hungry, and more. The donation deficit may result in fewer resources allocated to any one of these programs, meaning fewer families placed in permanent housing, fewer children participating in after school and summer programs, and fewer meals served.

Through the DAWNS Rapid Rehousing program, the average cost of rental assistance for a family is $2,300, and the average cost for single women is $1,116. The $55,000 shortfall could mean 24 fewer families or 49 fewer women coming out of homelessness and placed into permanent housing.

Whatever is not made up in the two weeks until the January 31 deadline, The Salvation Army of Dane County will aim to make up during the Summer Kettle Campaign, beginning in July.

“The programs and services provided by The Salvation Army are just too important and too necessary to let fall to the wayside,” said Steve Heck, Director of Operations. “We are serving about fourteen hundred individuals- including families, single women, and children- in our shelters every year. We can’t let them down.”

There are many ways to help; Donations should be marked specifically for the “Red Kettle Campaign.”
