LA CROSSE – A program hoping to provide families and their children with first day of school clothing is in need of clothing sponsors.
The ‘Back 2 School’ program is a collaborative effort from The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities in La Crosse. The program provides an unlimited amount of school supplies to students and up to 500 students with clothing. Public donations are needed to keep up with program demand.
“It can be very difficult to find clothing sponsors for each of the 500 children. Last year, we were handing out tags up until the day before distribution,” said Nick Ragner of The Salvation Army. “We need all hands on deck in order to help the most families possible. New clothing can have a large impact on these students and how they feel about themselves while in school. Tag sponsors have an opportunity to help these kids feel comfortable around their classmates and ultimately be successful in the classroom.”
Tags featuring a student’s name, clothing sizes, and special considerations can be found at The Salvation Army’s offices at 223 N. 8th Street or at The Salvation Army Thrift Store at 728 Copeland Avenue. Tags are also available through a new partnership with Plato’s Closet and Once Upon A Child.
Businesses, organizations, or individuals that would like to take a large amount of clothing tags can do so by contacting The Salvation Army offices at 608-782-6126. All clothing donations are asked to be returned to The Salvation Army by August 10th.
School supply donations can be brought to The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, or Menards in La Crosse or Onalaska. La Crosse area Shopko stores will begin accepting school supply donations on July 16th.
Distribution of the clothing and school supplies will be on August 15th. For more information on the ‘Back 2 School’ program, visit www.SalvationArmyLaCrosse.org.
