Emergency Shelter introduces more Bunk Beds to maximize Shelter

LA CROSSE – The Salvation Army Emergency Shelter is looking to maximize their limited shelter space in order to better help those in need.

On Wednesday, July 17th: Volunteers assisted Salvation Army staff during the United Way’s ‘Day of Caring’ event by installing new bunk beds into the gymnasium, which serves as an overnight shelter for single men who are staying at the shelter.  Eight bunk beds and a single cot were installed yesterday afternoon as part of the Salvation Army’s strategic plan, while 15 lockers were demolished to make room for the new sleeping areas.

“Bunk Beds are a better use of the limited space we have,” said Krista Coey, Social Services Director of The Salvation Army. “We want to offer a more flexible space, so we have the opportunity to house as many individuals as we can when the need arises, such as the Polar Vortexes we experienced earlier this Winter.”

No shelter residents were displaced during this process.  Installation of the new bunk beds and demolition of the lockers was completed within a matter of hours during the ‘Day of Caring’ event, with volunteer groups coming from Dairyland Power Cooperative, Kaplan Professional Education, and Trane.  For more information or to donate, please call The Salvation Army at (608)782-6126.
