Letter Carriers’ Annual Food Drive Set for May 12

GREEN BAY, WI -- The National Association of Letter Carriers will conduct its 26th annual food drive on Saturday, May 12. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations as they deliver mail along their postal routes.
The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, held annually on the second Saturday in May. Letter Carriers throughout 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam will participate.
Pantry shelves filled up through winter-holiday generosity are often bare by late spring. Also, with most school meal programs suspended during summer months, millions of children must find alternate sources of nutrition.
“Six days a week, letter carriers see first-hand the needs in the communities where we work and we're committed to helping meet those needs," states Randy Meyer, Food Drive Coordinator. "The Postal Service's network makes it possible for us to provide this critically needed assistance.”
There is a growing need for food assistance throughout Brown County, with the 2016 Brown County LIFE Study indicating 58% of students were enrolled in the free and reduced-fee lunch program in the 2014-2015 school year. The study also indicated 51% of people with incomes of less than $10,000 per year said not having enough food to avoid hunger was a problem some, most or all of the time.
Last year, letter carriers throughout Northeast Wisconsin collected 262,647 pounds of food donations along their postal routes. Brown County alone collected 161,394 pounds of food, thanks to the generosity of those in our community.
On May 12, as they deliver mail, Brown County letter carriers will collect the donations that residents leave near their mail boxes. People are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, peanut butter, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox before the regular mail delivery on Saturday.
Food collected through this national drive stays in each local community. Last year, 23 local food programs throughout Brown County benefited from this food drive.
